Open WiFi Speed CheckWhat is this tool?
WiFi Speed Check measures your real internet connection performance directly in your browser using high-resolution performance timers and progressive HTTP fetch streams.
The test measures round-trip HTTP latency (ping) across multiple requests, calculates packet jitter, streams chunked binary payloads to measure download Mbps, and measures upload throughput where network policies permit.
It reads browser network telemetry via navigator.connection (such as downlink and RTT estimates) and clearly identifies them as browser estimates rather than physical test results.
Zero simulated data or fake Mbps values are shown. If a measurement cannot be reliably completed, the tool displays an honest status.
How to use it
- Connect your device to your WiFi networkEnsure your phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop is connected to your primary WiFi router network (5 GHz band recommended).
- Close background downloads and streamingPause active file downloads, torrents, or streaming media to ensure your full bandwidth is measured.
- Click Start TestThe engine runs sequential latency checks, streams progressive data chunks to measure download speed, and tests upload packets.
- Review your detailed metricsInspect your download Mbps, upload Mbps, ping, jitter, test duration, and connection quality interpretation.
What the results mean
Download Throughput (Mbps)
Calculated from actual bytes received over elapsed time: (bytes * 8) / seconds / 1,000,000.
Upload Throughput (Mbps)
Calculated from actual binary payload bytes transmitted to the test endpoint over elapsed duration.
Ping / Latency (ms)
Round-trip time for network packets between your browser and the CDN edge server.
Jitter (ms)
Mean variance between successive latency samples indicating network stability.
Tips
- To test WiFi coverage in different rooms, run the test near your router and then repeat it in distant rooms to identify signal dead zones.
- If you are connected to a VPN, your traffic routes through an intermediary server which can reduce measured speed and increase latency.
- Remember that browser speed tests measure internet throughput; physical WiFi signal strength (dBm) cannot be directly read by web pages.
Troubleshooting
Why is upload speed marked as unavailable?
Some corporate firewalls, browser extensions, or network policies block outbound POST requests to external test endpoints. When this happens, the tool displays an honest unavailable status rather than inventing a number.
Why does my result differ from my ISP subscription plan?
ISP advertised plans represent theoretical maximum wired speeds to your modem. Real-world wireless throughput is impacted by distance from the router, wall attenuation, radio interference, and device CPU performance.
