What Is My IP Address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. When you access a website or online service, your public IP address identifies your connection — similar to how a postal address identifies a physical location.

The IP address shown by this tool is your public IP: the address your Internet Service Provider (ISP) assigns to your internet connection, and the address that external services on the internet can see.

Public IP vs Private IP

Public IP

Assigned by your ISP. Visible to websites and external services. Used for routing traffic across the internet. This is the IP shown by this tool.

Private IP

Assigned by your router to devices inside your local network (e.g., 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x). Not visible to the internet. Used for local device communication only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my public IP address?
Your public IP address is the address assigned to your network by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is the address that websites and online services see when you connect to them. Unlike private IP addresses (used inside your home or office network), your public IP is visible to the outside internet.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) uses 32-bit numeric addresses (e.g., 203.0.113.1) and supports around 4.3 billion unique addresses. IPv6 (version 6) uses 128-bit hexadecimal addresses (e.g., 2001:db8::1) and supports a vastly larger address space to accommodate the growing number of internet-connected devices.
Can my public IP address change?
Yes. Most ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses that can change when you reset your router, reconnect to the network, or after a period of inactivity. Some ISPs offer static IP addresses (which do not change) as an optional service, often for business accounts.
Does a VPN change my public IP?
Yes. When you connect through a VPN (Virtual Private Network), your internet traffic is routed through the VPN server, and the IP address seen by websites is the VPN server's IP address, not your own. This tool will display the VPN server's IP address if a VPN is active.
What is a private IP address?
A private IP address is used within your local network (such as your home Wi-Fi) and is not directly visible on the public internet. Common private IP ranges include 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and 172.16.x.x to 172.31.x.x. This tool shows your public IP, not your private local address.
Can I find my IP address on mobile?
Yes. This Find My IP tool works on all devices including smartphones and tablets. Open the tool in any browser on your mobile device, and your public IP address will be detected and displayed automatically.
Why does the tool show a different IP than expected?
The IP shown is your public IP as seen by the detection service. If you use a VPN, proxy, or mobile data, the displayed IP may differ from what you see in your router settings (which shows your local network's IP). Mobile devices on cellular data will show the carrier's IP.
Is my IP address stored when I use this tool?
This tool uses a third-party public IP detection API to retrieve your IP address. The IP lookup request is made from your browser to the API service. We do not store your IP address. For the API service's data practices, refer to their privacy policy.
