Key Event Tester Guide

Learn how browser keyboard events are fired, understand the difference between key and code, and inspect keyboard input behavior.

EVENT FUNDAMENTALS

What is a Keyboard Event?

When a user interacts with a physical keyboard, the browser dispatches a stream of DOM keyboard events to the currently focused window. The primary events are keydown (when a key is first depressed) and keyup (when the key is released).

This tool inspects these events directly inside your browser. Remember that browser event timing represents software processing dispatch—it is not the same as physical switch actuation latency or USB controller polling frequency.

DOM SPECIFICATION

event.key vs event.code

  • KEY
    Logical Character Value

Reflects the typed character determined by active layout and modifiers (e.g. 'a', 'A', '1', '!').

  • CODE
    Physical Key Position

Stable physical location code that remains constant regardless of active language layout (e.g. 'KeyQ', 'Space').

KEY LOCATION

event.location Values

0
Standard (0)

Standard alphanumeric, symbol and navigation keys on primary layout.

1
Left (1)

Left modifier keys: Left Shift, Left Control, Left Alt, Left Meta/Command.

2
Right (2)

Right modifier keys: Right Shift, Right Control, Right Alt, Right Meta.

3
Numpad (3)

Dedicated numeric keypad keys, numpad operators and Numpad Enter.

SHORTCUT DEBUGGING

Modifier Keys & Shortcut Debugging

Keyboard shortcuts rely on simultaneous key combinations (chords). Each keyboard event contains boolean properties: ctrlKey, shiftKey, altKey, and metaKey (Command on Mac, Windows key on PC).

When testing shortcuts like Ctrl + Shift + S, note that browsers intercept several combinations by default. Fullscreen or capture mode helps isolate inputs, though operating-system reserved hotkeys cannot be overridden by web standards.
