Refresh Rate Test Guide

Learn how display refresh rate works, how browser-based testing estimates frame timing, why refresh rate and FPS are different, and how to interpret your results.

01

What Is Refresh Rate?

The refresh rate of a display describes how many times per second the panel completely redraws its raster grid. Measured in Hertz (Hz), a higher refresh rate shortens the physical duration each image stays on screen before being replaced by the next frame.

Key Insight: 144Hz updates its pixels every 6.94ms compared to 16.67ms for 60Hz, providing over double the visual motion data.
02

Refresh Rate vs FPS

FPS (Frames Per Second) measures how many discrete frames your GPU produces. Refresh Rate (Hz) measures how frequently your physical monitor cycles its pixels.

If your graphics card renders 200 FPS on a 60Hz display, the monitor physically discards 140 of those frames, displaying only 60.

03

How a Browser Refresh Rate Test Works

Web browsers expose requestAnimationFrame, which fires right before each hardware vertical blanking interval (VSync).

By collecting hundreds of consecutive microsecond timestamps using performance.now(), this tool applies statistical outlier filtering (median and trimmed mean) to compute your display's effective refresh frequency.

04

Understanding Frame Time

Frame time is the mathematical reciprocal of refresh frequency (time = 1000 / Hz). The lower the frame time, the less latency you experience between physical mouse movement and on-screen photon emission.

60 Hz16.67 ms
120 Hz8.33 ms
144 Hz6.94 ms
240 Hz4.17 ms
05

What Is Frame Pacing?

Frame pacing refers to the timing consistency between consecutive frame deliveries. A monitor may average 144Hz, but if frames arrive unevenly (e.g. 4ms then 12ms then 5ms), the visual experience will appear micro-stuttered.

06

Why Refresh Rate Results Fluctuate

  • OS Thread Scheduling: JavaScript executes alongside other page scripts and layout passes.
  • Power-Saving Profiles: Laptops on battery often dynamically throttle panels from 120Hz down to 60Hz.
  • Secondary Monitors: Running 60Hz and 144Hz monitors simultaneously can cause window compositor pacing conflicts.
  • Browser Throttling: Unfocused windows receive downgraded timer frequency to conserve energy.
07

How to Test 60Hz

Standard 60Hz displays will output frame times hovering right around 16.67ms with an estimated rate between 59.8Hz and 60.2Hz. Keep background video playback paused for optimal measurement.

08

How to Test 120Hz

Common on modern smartphones, tablets, and Apple ProMotion displays. Frame delivery targets 8.33ms. Verify your OS Display Settings have 120Hz selected rather than 60Hz.

09

How to Test 144Hz

Ensure you are connected via DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0+ and verify the Windows Advanced Display Properties show 144.00Hz. Measured frame intervals should center tightly at 6.94ms.

10

How to Test 165Hz

165Hz panels deliver frames every 6.06ms. Some monitors require enabling a display overdrive or overclocking toggle in the monitor's physical On-Screen Display (OSD) menu to unlock 165Hz.

11

How to Test 240Hz

High-end esports displays update every 4.17ms. Make sure hardware acceleration is active in your browser settings so your dedicated GPU compositor handles requestAnimationFrame.

12

How to Get More Accurate Results

  • Enter Fullscreen Mode: Bypasses desktop window manager composition overhead.
  • Focus This Window: Ensure no other applications or videos are playing in the background.
  • Use Precision Mode: Discards initial warmup frames and transient scheduler spikes.
