These are coarse hints the browser exposes to help pages scale media — not measured speed-test results. Downlink and RTT here are estimates, separate from the measured values above. Measurements run against Cloudflare's anycast speed edge (speed.cloudflare.com), which receives your IP as part of any normal request.

Understanding Your Speed Test Results

What each measured metric means for your everyday internet experience.

Download Speed

How quickly data arrives on your device from the internet. Essential for HD streaming, browsing, and downloading games or updates.

Upload Speed

How quickly data leaves your device. Important for video calls, sending attachments, cloud backups, and live streaming.

Latency (Ping)

The round-trip delay in milliseconds. Lower ping feels snappier in games, trading, and voice calls.

Jitter

The consistency of your latency over time. Low jitter keeps audio streams stable and prevents rubber-banding in multiplayer games.

How to Run an Internet Speed Test

Steps for the most accurate, representative measurement.

01. Connect to Network

Use Ethernet or 5 GHz WiFi for the cleanest throughput reading without radio interference.

02. Pause Active Downloads

Close peer-to-peer transfers, streaming tabs, and automatic game updates first.

03. Disable VPN Temporarily

To measure your true ISP bandwidth, disconnect from VPN tunnels before starting.

04. Click Start Speed Test

The engine runs round-trip latency checks, then streams real data for download and upload.

05. Watch Live Throughput

The gauge and time-series graph update from real samples as bytes transfer.

06. Review Complete Metrics

Inspect download, upload, ping, jitter, and the connection-quality interpretation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about browser-based internet speed testing.

How do I test my internet speed?

Open this Internet Speed Test page, ensure other heavy network downloads or 4K video streams on your network are paused, and click 'Start Speed Test'. The engine will measure your round-trip request latency (ping), calculate jitter, stream data chunks to measure download throughput, and transmit byte buffers to test upload throughput.

What is a good internet speed?

For single-user web browsing and messaging, 10–25 Mbps is sufficient. For 4K Ultra HD streaming and smooth remote work, 25–50 Mbps is recommended. For multi-device households, online gaming, large file downloads, and content creation, 100 Mbps to 300+ Mbps provides a seamless experience.

What is the difference between download and upload speed?

Download speed measures how quickly data is transferred from internet servers to your device (browsing websites, streaming movies, downloading games). Upload speed measures how quickly data is sent from your device to the internet (video calling on Zoom, backing up photos to the cloud, uploading videos to YouTube). Most residential broadband connections provide higher download than upload.

What does Mbps mean?

Mbps stands for Megabits per second. It is the standard telecommunication unit for network throughput. One byte contains 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps internet connection can theoretically transfer approximately 12.5 Megabytes (MB) of data per second under ideal conditions.

What is a good ping (latency)?

Latency is the round-trip time (in milliseconds) required for a packet to travel between your browser and the test server. Under 20 ms is exceptional, 20–50 ms is standard and great for competitive gaming, 50–100 ms is acceptable for general browsing, and over 150 ms can introduce noticeable lag in real-time interactions.

What is jitter?

Jitter measures the variance or inconsistency between consecutive latency measurements. A connection with steady 25 ms ping has near-zero jitter, whereas a connection fluctuating between 20 ms and 90 ms has high jitter. Low jitter (under 5 ms) is critical for glitch-free VoIP calls and online multiplayer gaming.

Why does my internet speed change throughout the day?

Internet speeds naturally vary due to neighborhood ISP network congestion during peak evening hours, router CPU load, background operating system updates on other household devices, and thermal throttling in wireless modems.

Why is my speed test slower over WiFi than Ethernet?

Wired Ethernet cables provide dedicated, shielded, full-duplex transmission without radio interference. In contrast, WiFi signals are subject to radio frequency attenuation through walls, channel interference from neighbor routers, distance drop-off, and half-duplex radio sharing.

Can a VPN affect my internet speed test?

Yes. Virtual Private Networks encrypt all network traffic and route it through a remote VPN server. The cryptographic processing overhead and longer physical routing path typically increase ping latency and can reduce throughput by 10% to 40%.

Why is upload testing sometimes marked as unavailable?

Upload testing requires sending binary byte buffers to an authorized server endpoint via HTTP POST. If a corporate firewall, security gateway, or browser extension restricts outbound POST requests to external test servers, the tool displays 'Upload test unavailable' rather than generating a synthetic value.

Does this speed test work on mobile data (4G / 5G)?

Yes. This tool works across any internet connection including 4G LTE, 5G, fiber optic broadband, cable, DSL, satellite, and mobile hotspots directly within mobile browsers without requiring an app.

Does this speed test work with wired Ethernet?

Yes. Testing on a wired Ethernet connection often yields the highest throughput and lowest latency because it bypasses wireless interference and radio congestion.

How accurate is a browser-based speed test?

Browser-based speed tests measure the actual TCP/HTTP throughput achievable by your browser at the application layer. While low-level desktop CLI tools measure raw socket throughput, browser measurements accurately reflect real-world web application performance.

Why do different speed tests show different results?

Different speed test services use different server hosting locations, routing paths, test payload algorithms, and CDN networks. Your speed to a nearby edge server will naturally be faster than to a server hosted across the country.
