How To Use
  1. 1Press any physical key — the press stage lights up and every keystroke is measured.
  2. 2Click Select Key and press a key to focus the frequency tracker on that key.
  3. 3Hold keys or press several at once to measure hold duration and multi-key rollover.
  4. 4Tune the rapid-press threshold and log size in Settings, then press Reset for a fresh session.

Key Press Test Guide

Learn how keyboard key presses are detected, measured and visualized directly in your browser.

Overview

What is a Key Press Test?

A key press test monitors keyboard events generated by your operating system and web browser in real time. It confirms whether individual keys register reliably, tracks simultaneous multi-key combinations, and measures microsecond timing cadence.

While browser-based testing cannot directly inspect physical switch contacts, actuation spring force, or internal firmware debounce circuitry, observing browser event streams provides an accurate, non-invasive benchmark for typing rhythm and key health.

Step-By-Step

How to Use

  1. 01Choose a Key — Click 'Select Key' to focus on a specific key (e.g. Spacebar, W, Shift) or simply press any physical key on your keyboard.
  2. 02Press & Release — Tap or hold keys. The live visualizer highlights active keys, measures actuation hold duration, and tracks press-to-press intervals.
  3. 03Watch Live Statistics — Observe real-time presses per second, high-resolution microsecond intervals, rollover concurrency, and auto-repeat filtration.
  4. 04Review Timing & History — Inspect the chronological event log, recent press interval timeline, frequency rankings, and diagnostic signal details.
Metrics

What Does It Measure?

Key Press CountACCURACY

Calculates total physical key strikes while intelligently ignoring operating system auto-repeat hold signals.

Press FrequencySPEED

Live calculation of presses per second (CPS) across elapsed session time using high-resolution performance timers.

Hold DurationTIMING

Measures precise milliseconds elapsed between physical keydown and corresponding keyup releases.

Press IntervalCADENCE

Measures interval between consecutive physical keydown events to analyze single-key tap cadence and rhythm.

Simultaneous KeysROLLOVER

Detects multiple concurrent keys held down simultaneously, providing multi-key rollover (NKRO) diagnosis.

Auto-Repeat EventsDIAGNOSTIC

Distinguishes initial mechanical switch actuation from OS firmware key repetition without inflating press counts.

Technical Specifications

Understanding Browser Keyboard Events

keydown

Fires immediately when a physical key is actuated down to its electrical contact point.

keyup

Fires when the key is released above the switch reset point, allowing hold duration calculation.

event.code

Identifies the physical switch location on the keyboard regardless of language layout (e.g. KeyW).

event.repeat

Flagged by the browser when OS key repetition fires while holding down a switch. Filtered to prevent false press counts.

performance.now()

High-resolution DOMHighResTimeStamp providing sub-millisecond precision for intervals and hold timing.
