Open Internet Speed TestWhat is this tool?
The Internet Speed Test evaluates your live internet connection throughput and responsiveness directly in your browser using high-resolution timers and progressive HTTP fetch streams.
The test works across all connection types — wired Ethernet, WiFi, cellular mobile data (4G/5G), and fiber broadband.
It measures sequential round-trip request latency (ping), calculates packet jitter, streams chunked data to calculate download throughput in Mbps, and transmits byte buffers to measure upload speed.
All calculations derive strictly from actual transferred bytes over elapsed time. Zero simulated scores, fake Mbps numbers, or fake connection types are generated.
How to use it
- Connect your device to your networkEnsure your computer, phone, or tablet is connected to the internet via Ethernet, WiFi, or cellular data.
- Pause bandwidth-heavy background tasksClose file downloads, torrent clients, cloud syncing, or video streams to ensure full bandwidth is allocated to the test.
- Click Start Speed TestThe engine runs sequential ping latency checks, measures jitter, streams progressive data chunks for download, and verifies upload throughput.
- Review complete performance diagnosticsInspect your download throughput, upload throughput, ping latency, jitter, test duration, and connection quality interpretation.
What the results mean
Download Throughput (Mbps)
Measured rate of receiving data from internet edge servers: (bytes * 8) / seconds / 1,000,000.
Upload Throughput (Mbps)
Measured rate of transmitting data to internet edge servers.
Request Latency (ms)
Round-trip delay for HTTP requests between your browser and the CDN edge server.
Jitter (ms)
Variance between consecutive latency measurements indicating packet arrival stability.
Tips
- For the purest baseline test of your ISP's line speed, test using a wired Ethernet connection to eliminate wireless radio variables.
- Temporary VPN usage adds cryptographic overhead and routing distance; test both with and without VPN to measure tunnel overhead.
- Browser connection type (WiFi vs Ethernet) is kept private by modern browser security sandboxes and is faithfully marked as Unknown when protected.
Troubleshooting
Why is upload speed marked as unavailable?
If network policies, ad blockers, or firewall rules block outbound binary POST requests to test servers, the tool cleanly reports 'Upload test unavailable' instead of guessing.
Why does my result differ from another speed test app?
Different speed test services host servers in different data centers with different network peering. Speed to an edge server near your city will naturally differ from a server across the continent.
