What this calculator does

The Age Calculator turns a date of birth and a target date into an exact age. It uses calendar-aware borrowing rather than dividing by 365, which is why the years-months-days figure matches how people actually count age.

Alongside that it gives your age in single units — total days, weeks, months, hours, minutes and seconds — a next-birthday countdown, birthday details including the zodiac sign for the date, an age-difference comparison between two people, and a target-age or retirement projection.

The target date defaults to today, but the Custom option lets you compute an age at any past or future date. Recent calculations and saved favourites are kept in your browser's local storage.

How to use it

  1. Enter the date of birthBirth time is optional. Supplying it makes the hours, minutes and seconds totals exact rather than counted from midnight; leaving it out is fine for everything else.
  2. Choose the date to measure toToday is the default. The presets cover Yesterday, Jan 1, Dec 31, Month Start and Month End, and Custom accepts any date — including a future one, which is how the target-age projection works.
  3. Press CALCULATE AGEThe primary result is years, months and days. Everything below it — unit totals, next birthday, milestones — is derived from the same pair of dates.
  4. Compare two ages if you need a differenceCOMPARE AGES takes a second date of birth and reports the gap between two people. It is the same calendar arithmetic applied to two births rather than a birth and today.
  5. Use the target-age section for projectionsEnter an age you want to reach and it returns the date you reach it. This is what drives the retirement projection and the milestone list.

What the results mean

Years, months and days

This is the exact figure. It is produced by subtracting year, month and day separately and then borrowing: if the day count goes negative it borrows the real length of the month before the target date, and if the month count then goes negative it borrows twelve months from the year. That is why the days figure is never a fictional 30-day month.

Total days

Counted directly between the two calendar dates in UTC, so it includes every leap day that fell between them. This is the number to trust when an exact day count matters.

Why total days is not age × 365

Because roughly one year in four has 366 days. Over 30 years that is seven or eight extra days, which is exactly the discrepancy people notice when they multiply instead of counting. The page's own FAQ asks this question directly.

Age in months is approximate

The single-unit months figure divides total days by the average month length of 365.2425 ÷ 12 days. It is a smooth number for comparisons, not a calendar month count — the exact months live in the years-months-days result.

Leap-day births

A 29 February birth date is flagged. The calendar arithmetic handles it correctly in non-leap years by borrowing from February's real length, and the page discusses the convention in its own leap-year FAQs.

The formula

These are the expressions the calculator evaluates, written out so you can reproduce any result by hand.

Exact age with borrowingyears = tY − bY · months = tM − bM · days = tD − bDIf days < 0: days += daysInMonth(month before target), months −= 1. If months < 0: months += 12, years −= 1.
Total elapsed daystotalDays = (Date.UTC(tY, tM, tD) − Date.UTC(bY, bM, bD)) ÷ 86,400,000
Derived unit totalsweeks = totalDays ÷ 7 · hours = totalDays × 24 · minutes = totalDays × 1,440
Approximate monthsapproxMonths = totalDays ÷ (365.2425 ÷ 12)365.2425 is the mean Gregorian year length, which is what makes this an average rather than a calendar count.

Worked example

A birth date of 15 March 1990 measured on 2 September 2026. Watch the day borrowing: 2 minus 15 is negative, so August's 31 days are borrowed.

Date of birth
15 March 1990
Target date
2 September 2026
Raw subtraction
years 36, months 6, days −13
Borrow from August (31 days)
days = −13 + 31 = 18, months = 6 − 1 = 5
Exact age
36 years, 5 months, 18 days
Total days
13,320 days

The exact age is 36 years, 5 months and 18 days. Note that 36 × 365 is 13,140 — 180 days short of the real total, because it ignores both the extra months and the nine leap days in that span.

Limits worth knowing

A browser can only report what the platform gives it. These are the honest boundaries of this page, so a result is never read as more than it is.

  • It calculates calendar age. Legal age of majority, school-year cut-offs, insurance “age nearest birthday” conventions and similar rules vary by country and institution, and this tool does not apply any of them.
  • Time zones are not modelled. Dates are handled in UTC to keep day counts stable, so a birth recorded late at night in one time zone can differ by a day from a local-time interpretation. The page raises the same point in its time-zone FAQ.
  • The single-unit months figure is an average, not a calendar count. Use the years-months-days result whenever exactness matters.
  • Your date of birth is not stored anywhere but this browser. History and favourites are local storage entries; there is no account and nothing is transmitted.

Tips

  • Add your birth time if you want the hours and seconds totals to be meaningful. Without it they are counted from midnight, which is off by up to a day.
  • Use a future Custom date to answer “how old will I be when…” questions — it is the same calculation, run forward.
  • For a difference between two people, use COMPARE AGES rather than calculating each age separately and subtracting; the direct comparison handles the month and day borrowing for you.

Troubleshooting

My total days does not match my age multiplied by 365.

It should not. Leap years add a day roughly every four years, so a genuine day count is always larger than the multiplication. The total-days figure is the accurate one.

The days part of my age looks wrong.

It is borrowing from the real length of the month before the target date, which is 28, 29, 30 or 31 days depending on the month and year. Calculators that assume a fixed 30-day month give a different — and less accurate — answer.

I was born on 29 February. What does the calculator do in other years?

It flags leap-day births and computes the age with the same borrowing rules, using February's real length in the year concerned. Which date counts as your birthday in a non-leap year is a legal and cultural convention rather than an arithmetic one, and the page covers that in its FAQs.

The next-birthday countdown seems a day out.

That is almost always a time-zone or birth-time effect. Dates are handled in UTC; adding your birth time, or checking the target date is the one you meant, usually resolves it.
