Test your keyboard
Press each key on your physical keyboard. The matching key lights up as it registers. Function keys F1–F12 are captured automatically and won’t trigger browser actions.
Turn on Capture keys to also test Tab, Space and arrows safely. F12 may still open your browser’s dev tools.

Everything you need to know about testing your keyboard online, checking individual keys, detecting common problems and measuring typing performance.
A keyboard test online is the fastest way to settle a nagging question: does every key on your keyboard actually work? Real Test Keyboard is a free keyboard tester andonline keyboard tester that runs entirely in the browser. Open it, press a key, and the matching key lights up on screen — no account, no ads blocking the tool, no download. Maybe a laptop key went quiet after a coffee spill, a switch on your mechanical board feels mushy, or you've just unboxed something new and want to be certain it's flawless before the return window closes. Whatever brought you here, you can run a complete keyboard test in under a minute and walk away with a clear answer instead of a hunch.
Head to the keyboard tester — no setup, no install.
Walk across the board, top to bottom, including modifiers.
Any key that didn't light up is the one to investigate.
There's no setup. Start the test, then move across the on-screen keyboard pressing every key you can reach — letters, numbers, the modifiers, the function row, the arrows and the number pad. Each key you hit stays highlighted, so a quick glance tells you which keys have registered and which one is stubbornly refusing to respond.
If you'd rather see the raw signal, the live panel prints the key code and event for every press, which quietly makes this a handy keyboard test input tool for developers debugging shortcuts or a remap. One tip: switch on Capture keys before you test Tab, Space, the arrows or the F-row, otherwise the browser tends to grab those for itself.

Because everything happens in the browser, the same online keyboard test behaves identically on every machine. Run a keyboard test online on a laptop after a repair, give a Dell or HP laptop keyboard a once-over before you commit to buying it, or check that a Chromebook's keys all fire before the school term starts. Mac owners are covered the same way — use it as a mac keyboard test for a MacBook's built-in keyboard, or connect an Apple Magic Keyboard and confirm every key on that too. A PC keyboard test online is no different: if the page loads, the tester works, whether you're on Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS.

A mechanical keyboard test online is where the tester really earns its keep. Mechanical switches age differently from the rubber domes in a membrane board, and a tired switch often starts to chatter — firing twice from a single tap. The tester flags any key that double-fires within a fraction of a second of release, so you catch a failing switch before it starts dropping duplicate letters into your work; here'show to fix a stuck or chattering keyonce you've found one. Gamers have their own reason to check: press your whole movement cluster at once — W, A, S, D and space, say — and make sure every key still registers. If a couple drop out, the board is ghosting, and our guide tokeyboard ghosting and n-key rolloverexplains why it happens and how to test the limit.
A re-fire within 40 ms of release gets flagged — the surest sign of a tired or dirty mechanical switch.
Press the whole movement cluster at once and see if every key still registers. A miss is a ghost.
Read the live event view to see exactly how many simultaneous presses your board reports to the browser.
Per-key press counter turns a vague "something feels off" into a number you can point at.
Confirming that keys work is one job; knowing how fast and accurately you type is another. If you arrived looking for a keyboard test speed or a WPM keyboard test, pair the key tester with ourfree typing speed test, which measures your words per minute and accuracy over a timed run. The two work well back to back — the tester proves no key is silently swallowing inputs, and then the typing test shows your real speed once you know the hardware is sound. It also makes a low-pressure keyboard test online practice space: somewhere to warm up, get a feel for an unfamiliar layout, or check that a repaired key keeps pace with your normal typing rhythm.
Measure your WPM and accuracy on a real passage over a 15 / 30 / 60 / 120-second run. Easy, Medium and Hard difficulty pools, with a personal best saved on this device.
A thorough keyboard test looks at more than whether a key prints a letter. Real Test Keyboard checks that each key registers on every press, that it doesn't repeat or chatter, and that the modifiers, function keys, arrows and number pad all answer. A per-key counter records exactly how many times each key fired, so a vague "something feels off" turns into a number you can point at. You can watch responsiveness in the live event view as well — a quick, informal read on whether presses land the instant your finger moves or lag a beat behind.
A few moments are worth a quick check. Test a used or refurbished keyboard the day it arrives, while you can still return it. Run through every key after cleaning a board or popping keycaps off, to be sure nothing was knocked loose. Give a new laptop a full pass during its first week, and re-test any key you've had repaired. And if you ever feel a key skip, stick or fire twice mid-sentence, an online keyboard test is the quickest way to prove whether the problem is real or just in your head.
Check every key before the return window closes — usually the first week is the easiest time to act on a fault.
Make sure no key was knocked loose after popping caps off, especially on builds with a hot-swap PCB.
Verify the repaired key before putting the board back to work. A single stuck key ruins typing.
Check the board the day it arrives, while you can still return it. A two-minute test beats a two-week regret.
Look for chatter, missed inputs, or inconsistent feel — the surest sign a switch is past its prime.
When a key skips or fires twice mid-typing, an online keyboard test is the fastest way to confirm the fault is real.
This is a keyboard test online free for everyone — no sign-up, no paywall, and nothing uploaded. Every keystroke is read and displayed locally in your browser and never leaves the page, so testing a work laptop is exactly as private as testing your own machine. There's no keyboard test software to download and no driver to install; the tool loads the moment a key starts misbehaving. Bookmark it as your default keyboard tester and come back whenever you need a fast, reliable keyboard test online — for a new laptop, a MacBook, a Chromebook, or a full-size mechanical board.
No account required. The full tester is available to every visitor without sign-up or paywall.
Keystrokes are processed locally in the browser where supported by the actual implementation.
Nothing to install. Open the page, press a key, get an answer.
Six tool suites live on this site: keyboard testing (keys, rollover, chatter, typing speed), display diagnostics (dead pixels, refresh rate, motion clarity), audio checks (speakers, headphones, microphones), online calculators, mobile device and sensor tests, and quick browser games. Every category has its own hub page linked from the homepage.
Use the search box near the top of any homepage — type "ghost", "mic" or "fps" and matching tools appear instantly. Otherwise pick a category tile in the quick launcher, drill into the hub page, or browse the popular tools list.
No. Every testing, diagnostic and calculator tool on Real Test Keyboard is free, with no sign-up, no usage limits and no paywalls.
Yes — the tools use standard web APIs, so they run in modern browsers on any of those systems. A few hardware-specific tests depend on browser support: vibration requires an Android browser (iOS Safari blocks the Vibration API), and some sensor prompts behave differently between Chrome and Safari.
The best online keyboard tester checks every key, flags chatter and double-firing, counts each press, supports full, TKL and 60% layouts, and runs free in your browser without collecting your data. Real Test Keyboard does all of this — press a key and it lights up instantly, with a clear pass-or-fail verdict once every key is tested.
Open the tester, then press every key on your physical keyboard one by one. Each key lights up and stays marked once it registers. When every key is lit, your keyboard passes. Any key that never lights up isn't reaching your computer.
Yes. Press any single key and the matching key on the on-screen diagram lights up while its press counter goes up. That makes it easy to check one suspect key — a sticky spacebar or a dead arrow — without running through the whole keyboard.
Yes. Hold several keys down together and each one lights up independently, so you can check key rollover and anti-ghosting — useful for gaming boards where combinations like W + A + Shift must all register at once. If a key stops responding while others are held, your keyboard has a rollover limit on that combination.
Yes. Modifier keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt, Command/Windows) are tested like any other key. For Tab, Space, the arrow keys and the F-row, turn on Capture keys in the toolbar so the browser doesn't scroll, change focus or fire shortcuts while you test them. F5, F11 and F12 are left to the browser on purpose so you keep refresh and fullscreen.
If a key never lights up, first turn on Capture keys — some keys like Tab, Space and the arrows are otherwise handled by the browser. If it still doesn't register, the key may have a hardware fault, or it may be one that doesn't send a standard signal (such as Fn, or some laptop media and brightness keys). A key that works here but not in your app points to a software issue rather than the keyboard.
A worn or dirty mechanical switch can register a single press as two — that's chatter (also called double-firing). The tester times the gap between a key's release and its next press; anything under 40 milliseconds is flagged as a possible fault and the key is highlighted in red.
Matching is done on the physical key position (KeyboardEvent.code), not the character it produces. That means the right cell lights up on QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ and other layouts — the character shown by your OS doesn't affect the test.
Full is the complete 104-key board with a number pad. TKL (tenkeyless, 87 keys) drops the number pad. 60% (61 keys) also drops the function row and navigation cluster. Pick the one that matches your keyboard, and use the ANSI/ISO toggle to match your Enter and left-Shift shape.
Yes. It works with any Windows keyboard — built-in laptop keyboards, USB and Bluetooth boards — in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and other modern browsers. The Windows and menu keys register just like the rest, and you can test the full 104-key layout including the number pad.
Yes. It works with the built-in MacBook keyboard, the Magic Keyboard and external boards, in Safari, Chrome and other browsers. Command, Option and Control all register normally. Apple's Fn / globe key doesn't emit a standard key event, so it may not light up — that's expected, not a fault.
Yes — it's ideal for both. On mechanical keyboards the chatter check catches worn switches that double-fire, and the press counter shows exactly how many times each key registered. For gaming keyboards, hold several keys at once to check rollover and anti-ghosting on the combinations you actually use.
The tool tests physical keyboards, so it shines when a hardware keyboard is connected — for example a Bluetooth or USB keyboard paired with a phone or tablet, which you can test just like on a desktop. A phone's on-screen touch keyboard has no physical switches to check, so there's nothing for the tester to verify there.
Yes. Real Test Keyboard runs entirely in your web browser — there's nothing to download, no app to install and no extension to add. Open the page, start pressing keys, and you're testing in seconds.
Yes, it's completely free. There's no account, no sign-up, no usage limit and no paywall — test as many keyboards as you like, as often as you like.
No. Everything runs locally in your browser and your keystrokes never leave the page — nothing is uploaded or recorded. The only thing saved is your layout preference (such as TKL or ISO), kept in your browser's local storage on this device so the tool remembers it next time.
Click Reset in the toolbar to clear every tested key and press count and start fresh. Reloading the page also resets the test, since each test is a point-in-time check of your keyboard.
